Supporting Your Breast

There are a few different ways to support your breast when breastfeeding. Some mothers have found that support using two fingers (second and third finger) also sometimes referred to as the scissor hold is effective. It has been discovered that the “C” (Palmer grasp) or “U” hold allows a mother to support her breast without putting too much pressure on the breast tissue. You basically use your thumb and index finger to form the letters “C” or “U”. Always be sure the position of your supporting hand does not interfere with your baby’s latch on. Fingers should remain as far way from the areola as needed to prevent interference. You should hold your breast so that the widest part of the breast lines up with the widest part of the baby’s mouth. For example, you will want to use the “C” hold when baby is facing you and the “U” hold when baby is coming in toward the breast with his head sideways. (LLL p.51)
