Side Lying

Anytime you can take advantage of a little down time go for it. This position allows you to rest while lying down and breastfeed at the same time. Sounds great to me! You may need assistance getting positioned at first so you can assure proper latch on. You may need pillows behind your back for support and underneath your head.

Positioning Tips

Lie on your side with a pillow supporting your head. Have baby lying on his side facing you. You want to start with the baby’s nose at the level of your nipple. This will ensure that when he tilts his head to latch he will be in the correct position for proper latch. Pull his knees close to your body. You can either have him lying directly on the bed or you can place your arm underneath him, whatever makes you most comfortable. Pay close attention to your comfort. Lean back into the pillows to? support your back. Choose the breast hold which best suits you and observe to be sure he gets a proper latch. After he is latched on you might want to place a pillow behind his back so you can relax without affecting his position. You may find in beneficial to place a pillow between your knees for comfort. When you are ready to switch breast sit him to burp then lay him flat on your chest roll over to your back and to the other side. Position as previously discussed.(LLL.51-52)

Always place your baby in a safe sleeping environment after you are finished breastfeeding!
