Cross Cradle Hold

There are a few different names for this hold: Cross Cradle, Crossover or Transition Hold. This position is similar to the cradle hold, but you are just holding the baby with the opposite arm. This is a good position because it allows you to more easily visualize the latch, while providing your baby with good head and neck support.

Positioning Tips

Support your baby’s head by resting his neck on the palm of your hand, with your thumb and fingers at the base of this head. Be careful not to hold on to the back of the baby’s head because this can sometimes cause him to pull away from the breast. Moms often use pillows under the baby’s body to elevate him to the level of the breast. With this position you will want to use the ‘U” hold. You are supporting your breast with the hand on the side of your body of the breast in which you are offering. So, if he is on the right breast you are supporting your right breast with your right hand and holding him with your left hand across the front of your body.(LLL 53)
