Cradle Hold
This is perhaps one the most commonly used position for new mothers and babies. However, it is not always the most appropriate choice. When infants are newborns they have little head control. Because mothers also have little control over infant head/neck using this position, it is often difficult for mother to assist with latch difficulties. This may be better suited for an older infant or more experienced breastfeeding baby. It has been said that mothers often identify with this position because it the position you most often see bottle feeders held.
Positioning Tips
- Infants head is resting slightly below your antecubital (bend of the arm) on your forearm, place infant with nose at the level of the nipple
- Place infant tummy to tummy with you.
- Make sure to keep your baby in alignment. He should? not have to turn his head to latch.
- Do not hold infant at the breast. He needs the freedom to adjust his position if necessary.
- If you can facilitate flexion of infant knees and hips this will help him maintain postural control.
- Support your breast using the appropriate technique as previously discussed and stimulate infant to latch.
