Regardless of the position you choose there are a few key points to keep in mind. Always make sure you are comfortable before beginning. It is usually necessary to have an extra pair of hands until you get more experience with breastfeeding. I don’t think you can ever have too many pillows on hand. Always pay close attention to your baby’s body alignment. Baby should always be tummy to tummy or chest to chest with you. Baby’s ear, shoulder and hip should always remain in a strait line with his held slightly tilted back. You never want your baby to have to turn his head to reach the breast. By turning the head it makes it more difficult for your baby to swallow as well as causing him to pull on the nipple which will lead to nipple soreness/damage. You should be comfortable using more than one breastfeeding position. Changing positions can be helpful in preventing sore nipples. There are a few basic breastfeeding positions that I am going to briefly review. Be aware that there are many ways to alter these positions as you grow in you breastfeeding relationship with your baby. My thought is whatever works, as long as mother and baby are healthy without complications, GO FOR IT!!!
