Sore/Cracked Nipples

This is the most common complication breastfeeding mothers run into. The number one reason for this is improper latch. When a baby latches on improperly they are usually content to keep right on going. That is way you play a pivotal role is making sure he learns the proper way. In just one nursing session with an improper latch, the discomfort for you can last for days. So, what are you to do?

1. Correct the latch

2. After breastfeeding you can rub a small amount of breastmilk or colostrum into the nipple and areola.

3. Allow your nipples to air dry

4. If there is broken skin noted you might want to purchase a breastfeeding approved nipple ointment. Be sure to buy only ointments which are safe for your baby to ingest. You do not want to have to remove anything from your nipples before breastfeeding. If you are already sore/cracked, having to remove an ointment by rubbing it off may make the problem worse.

5. Breast Shells can also be purchased where breastfeeding supplies are found. These are plastic disks which can be worn inside your bra in between feedings. These are never to be slept in or worn under a tight fitting bra. The shells help because they inhibit your clothing from rubbing against your nipples which are already sore. They also have several holes in the top which promote air circulation. Ask about these at the hospital when you deliver; many hospitals may provide these.
