Plugged Ducts
By definition a plugged duct is when a milk duct becomes inflamed because the milk is unable to flow through it freely. You may notice a tender spot, redness or a sore lump in your breast.
What might be the cause?
- Improper positioning
- Long intervals between nursing
- Supplementary bottles or excessive pacifier use
- Any clothing that may constrict the breast (poor fitting bra)
- Possibly a dried milk secretion covering the nipple opening
What do you do?
- GET PLENTY OF REST
- Correct latch and positioning.
Use multiple positions through out the day.
- Nurse frequently.
Begin on the affected side first.
- Warm wet or dry compresses to the affected area in combination with gentle massage.
- Loosen any restrictive clothing
- remove any dried secretions by soaking breast/nipple in plain warm water.
- begin treatment for a plugged duct at the first sign of a problem. This usually will help prevent Mastitis.
