Breast Care
It is always important to wash your hands before breastfeeding/pumping.
Helpful Hints:
- Avoid using soap/lotions to your nipples. There is no need for special cleansing of the breast/nipples while breastfeeding. These products often contain alcohol which can be drying to your nipples. This puts you at greater risk for sore/cracked nipples. Also, your body already does this for you. “The Montgomery glands that surround the nipple secrete a cleansing substance that lubricates the skin and discourages the growth of bacteria.” (LLL 58)
Be sure to protect you nipples from rough surfaces. Unnecessary rubbing to the nipples can cause skin breakdown. Allow your nipples to be exposed to air as much as possible through out the day. After each nursing session it is advised to allow your nipples to air dry before placing bra or breast pads.
- Be sure if you are wearing a bra, which by the way is not a necessity, that it is proper fitting. Have your self measured and fitted for a bra. An improper fitting bra can cause a variety of problems for a breastfeeding mother. Be very careful with underwire.
- Be sure to examine your breast frequently. If you find something different almost all breastfeeding complications can be fixed. It helps if you catch them early. If you see any redness or feel anything unusual refer to your Physician or Lactation Consultant for advice.(LLL 58).
- Keep in mind that breast problems are often one of the first indicators that you are doing too much. At any sign of complication you should stop, lay down with your baby, and get as much rest as possible.
